Pharmacology, Anti-Cancer Treatment Toxicities Courses Offered Through ASCO University

Aug 24, 2016

Cutting-edge oncology research underscores the importance of understanding drug interactions, as well as the need to manage toxicities associated with anti-cancer treatments. For medical professionals wanting an introduction to these topics, or simply looking for a refresher, ASCO University® can help.

Pharmacology and Anti-Cancer Treatment Toxicities courses are now offered through ASCO University, ASCO’s comprehensive online learning center. These interactive courses allow participants to learn at their own pace in order to facilitate and support enhanced patient care.

The Pharmacology course, taught by a board-certified oncology pharmacist, describes the mechanistic action of various DNA-damaging agents while helping users anticipate side effects and learn common toxicities. The targets and mechanisms of different cytotoxic agents are described throughout the course, allowing users to better understand the pathways as well as drug-drug interactions.

Pharmacology is presented in five sections:

  • DNA-alkylating agents
  • Topoisomerase inhibitors and antibiotics
  • Microtubule toxins
  • Antimetabolites
  • Drug interactions in oncology

Participants can earn a maximum of 2.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ by viewing the course content and resources, and completing the self-assessment and evaluation.

Anti-Cancer Treatment Toxicities is designed to help users identify toxicities associated with systemic and radiation therapies and apply management strategies to help patients experiencing these toxicities.

The course is broken up into five sections examining common anti-cancer toxicities of systemic and radiation therapies associated with 10 systems within the body. Those sections are:

  • Renal and hepatic systems
  • Central nervous and gastrointestinal systems
  • Pulmonary and cardiac systems
  • Endocrine and dermatologic systems
  • Hematologic and reproductive systems

Participants can earn a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ by viewing the course content and resources, and completing the self-assessment and evaluation.

ASCO members can purchase Anti-Cancer Treatment Toxicities through ASCO University for $108; non-members for $135. Pharmacology is available to members for $60; $75 for nonmembers.
