The core of ASCO’s mission is providing education to those working across the cancer care continuum. ASCO has continued to deliver on this mission by developing multiple educational programs both in-person and digitally, including ASCO’s Annual Meeting, thematic symposia, ASCO University, the Quality Training Program, and more. Our goal has been, and continues to be, striving to keep pace with the learning needs of our members and others involved in the provision of oncology care, and to address their needs through these educational programs.

To that end, ASCO’s educational resources must incorporate the latest advances in learning science to most effectively teach important cancer care material and enhance its application to practice. ASCO recognizes the necessity of continuing education in the field of cancer care, and a recent Board of Directors Strategy Retreat focused on education as a key initiative. To help bring together the wide array of educational offerings toward a common mission and overall direction, the Board of Directors has established a new Education Council. While existing committees and editorial boards will continue to oversee individual programs, the Education Council will ensure that ASCO’s educational goals and strategies match its programs, and will evaluate collaboration across ASCO’s education portfolio.

The Education Council will consist of 12 ASCO members, with five application-based seats that will be filled by leaders dedicated to advancing education. Specific responsibilities of the council include prioritizing the bridging of educational gaps, advising on the latest in educational tools, assessing new education program proposals, and more. The council will receive input from committees and staff across the Society. Interested applicants should send a Curriculum Vitae (no more than four pages) and Letter of Intent that describes the applicant’s interest in the council, education experience, and leadership experience to professionaldevelopment@asco.org. The deadline for applications is June 12, 2017.

We look forward to seeing the educational programs flourish with the advice of the new Education Council. Education is an essential part of our mission: a world where cancer is prevented or cured, and every survivor is healthy.
