ASCO Announces Newly Elected Leaders

ASCO is pleased to announce the results of the recent ASCO election for President-Elect, Treasurer, and positions on the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee. The seven newly elected leaders will begin their terms at the conclusion of the Annual Business Meeting, held June 1, during the 2015 ASCO Annual Meeting, in Chicago. Members are encouraged to attend this event to learn more about the newly elected leaders, as well as the Society's activities and priorities.

Major priorities for the incoming leaders will be the appropriate clinical use of genomic information and technologies; the development of CancerLinQ™ and other ASCO efforts to improve quality and value in cancer care; the global burden of cancer, particularly in areas with the most limited resources; the economics of oncology practice and health care payment reform; advocating for continued support of crucial medical research; and engaging every member of ASCO at every stage of their career.

Daniel F. Hayes, MD, FASCO
2015-2016 President-Elect (2016-2017 President, 2017-2018 Immediate Past President)

Dr. Hayes, a breast cancer specialist, is a Professor of Internal Medicine, the Stuart B. Padnos Professor in Breast Cancer, and the Clinical Director of the Breast Oncology Program at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. An ASCO member since 1986, Dr. Hayes served on the ASCO Board of Directors from 2011-2014, on the Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) Grants Selection Committee, as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, and on the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO) Editorial Board. He has served on several Expert Panels, including the ASCO–College of American Pathologists Estrogen Receptor/Progesterone Receptor and the HER2 Testing Panels (Co-Chair), Breast Cancer Consensus Panel, Use of Tumor Biomarkers in Advanced Breast Cancer and Early-Stage Breast Cancer Panels, and Breast Cancer Guideline Advisory Group, among others. In 2007, he was presented with ASCO's Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award and Lecture.
 

Craig R. Nichols, MD
Treasurer (2015-2018)

Dr. Nichols is the Co-Director of the Testicular Cancer Multidisciplinary Clinic at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle. He serves as co-primary investigator on the recently funded Northwest National Cancer Institute Community Oncology Research Program and is the Executive Officer of Cancer Control and Prevention Research for the Southwest Oncology Group. An ASCO member since 1986, Dr. Nichols serves as Co-Chair of the Management of Testicular Cancer Committee and as a member of the Practice Guidelines Implementation Network. Previously, Dr. Nichols served as a member of the Genitourinary Cancers Symposium Program Committee and Health Services Committee, and as Chair of the Nominating Committee.
 


 

J. Chris Nunnink, MD, FASCO
Board of Directors—Community Oncologist (2015-2019)

Dr. Nunnink is an Attending Physician in Medical Oncology at Fletcher Allen Health Care and an Associate Professor at the Vermont Cancer Center and the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, where he is developing a network for oncology care in rural upstate New York and Vermont. An ASCO member since 1986, he currently serves on the Clinical Practice Committee and has served on the State Affiliate Council. Dr. Nunnink has served as an ASCO delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) since 2010 and was the ASCO advisor to the AMA's Relative Value Scale Update Committee.



 

 

Stephen B. Edge, MD, FACS, FASCO
Board of Directors—Surgical Oncologist (2015-2019)

Dr. Edge is the Director of the Baptist Cancer Center and an Adjunct Professor of Surgery at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. Since joining ASCO in 1988, he has co-chaired the Guideline Panel for Postmastectomy Radiation and served on the Health Services Research Committee. He is currently a member of the Technology Assessment Panel for Sentinel Node Biopsy in Breast Cancer. He was on the ASCO/National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Quality Measure Panel and is currently on an ASCO Measure Development Task Force. He has been on the Editorial Boards of Cancer.Net, JCO, and the Journal of Oncology Practice.

 

Jedd D. Wolchok, MD, PhD
Board of Directors—Undesignated Specialist (2015-2019)

Dr. Wolchok is Chief of the Melanoma and Immunotherapeutics Service in the Department of Medicine and the Associate Director of the Ludwig Center for Cancer Immunotherapy at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He is an Associate Professor in the Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis Program at Weill Cornell Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University and an Associate Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He is an Associate Member in the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. Dr. Wolchok joined ASCO in 1998 and has served as Chair of the Scientific Program Committee and the Best of ASCO® Planning Committee. He has been a member of the JCO Editorial Board, Cancer Education Committee, and CCF Grants Selection Committee.

 

Lisa A. Carey, MD
Nominating Committee (2015-2018; Chair, 2017-2018)

Dr. Carey is Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Physician-in-Chief of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital. She is the Jacobs Preyer Distinguished Professor in Breast Cancer Research and Associate Director for Clinical Research at the University of North Carolina Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Carey joined ASCO in 1997 and has served as Subcommittee Chair of the Professional Development Committee and Track Leader of the Cancer Education Committee, as well as a member of the Breast Cancer Consensus Panel and JCO Editorial Board.




 

Primo N. Lara, Jr., MD
Nominating Committee (2015-2018)

Dr. Lara is a Professor of Medicine at the University of California (UC) Davis School of Medicine and Associate Director for Translational Research at the UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center. Since joining ASCO in 1997, he has served on the Cancer Education Committee, including as Chair of its Continuing Medical Education Subcommittee and as Genitourinary Cancers track leader, and on the JCO Editorial Board. He has also served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Northern California Oncologists, an ASCO State Affiliate society.
