Oncologists and oncology health care professionals may not always have a wealth of expertise when it comes to managing the business aspects of care delivery. Although one of the core competencies of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is “systems-based practice,” it is often difficult to find quality education that adequately addresses the underpinnings of health care administration. ASCO is addressing this void by providing a new eLearning series, the Business of Health Care
, which focuses on the fundamental principles of care delivery.
The Business of Health Care includes 10 online CME-accredited learning activities that can be accessed at any time on ASCO University. Each activity is approximately 30 minutes in length and is presented by nationally recognized faculty who are practicing clinicians and health system leaders.
Through this self-paced series, participants can gain an enhanced understanding of how costs are measured in an environment where a large portion of expenses are fixed and do not vary with the level of patient activity. Attention is also given to obtaining reimbursement and performance improvement as it relates to organizational culture.
The Business of Health Care is available at university.asco.org/business
, with a discount available for ASCO members. The series is also included in ASCO’s Education Essentials for Oncology Fellows and is available free of charge to all participating Training Programs.
