Dendritic cell therapy

Dendritic cell therapy
Cancer immunotherapy is poised to become treatment option in many cancers. The group is formed in order to keep clinical results posted to help clinicians make informed decisions. It would be an interactive platform to post queries, advises and discontent that could be reviewed by any one joining the group.

DENDRITIC CELL THERAPY MEETS RECIST CRITERIA

Dendritic cell (DC) therapy has often been neglected as a standard line of care among oncologists. This is because of its failure to produce evidences in relation to reduction in tumor load. Immunotherapists aim to prove that DC therapy results in halting tumor progression and increasing life span, but these terms remain subjective to verification. On the contrary, the oncologists have their own version of depicting positive changes in post-treated patients of chemotherapy. According to them, when chemotherapy has been stopped, patients feel better as they no more experience the AE, the appetite improves and the benefits of chemotherapy make the disease stable.

So, to prove the worthiness of DC therapy, it is important to show that the recipients have lived for years in stage IV disease, or that there is a radiological evidence of reduction in tumor load.

Our recent trial of DC in combination with losartan and low dose bevacuzimab (DCLB) is proving that the DC therapy clears the tumor load and improves terminally ill patients also.
We inducted four patients in a DCLB trial all with different cancers and in advanced stages. They are showing improvement in their general well being. The tumor load has reduced ranging from 20 to 30% in each of the cases till date.

On my recent visit to ASCO annual conference, I gathered from Dr. Rakesh K. Jain, the importance of managing tumor microenvironment in treating cancer. His speech, based on his research of 40 years has given me an impetus to translate it into clinical practice. Based on this, we are now including losartan and bevacuzimab to normalize the tumor microenvironment. This has helped to improve the outcome in above-mentioned cases.

The results would be published as soon as we close the study.

    • Akihiko MatsumotoI am a doctor of urology in Japan.
I treated some patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma by this therapy.
I would like to know its potentiality for now.
I am looking forward to developing this group.

    • Jamal KhanDear Dr. Akihiko
Wecome to the group. Good to know that you are one of the few doctors world-over who have used dendritic cells for treating advanced stage RCC patients.
We are into dendritic cell therapy in India and did phase 2/3 trials from 2005 till 2008. Our results are yet to be published. Shall keep you updated from time to time. Your contributions are welcome.

    • Akihiko MatsumotoDear Dr. Khan
Thank you for your reply. I wish your research will be published.
So Prof. Steinman passed away last week. I pray for the repose of his soul.
I heard that he took the dendritic cell therapy against pancreatic cancer.

    • Jamal KhanProf. Steinman has been the pioneer. He gave us the way to proceed and progress. I have been his follower since my college days, and joined MD in Microbiology only with the intentionto do lab immunology way back in ninetees. It is a day of rejoicing and mourning for me because he got the prize which he deserved for 30 years and at the same time he could not receive this news. He had even proved in his death that he has accepted his invention for his own treatment, that has given him respite in a cancer which sucks during first year of diagnosis. I pray to God to give him highest abode in Heaven. Amin.

    • Ratnavelu KananathanI would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Jamal for creating this group.
I am a Medical oncologist from Malaysia .
I feel strongly the way to go in future lies with our cell.
There is an explosion of trials then have started in non small cell as well as ovary apart from the established prostate cancer.

To Dr Jamal how are we going to use this platform to further the cause?
      10:46 AM September 09
    • Jamal KhanDear Dr. Kananathan
Thanks for your signing to the group. You have used the personalized dendritic cell therapy for some of your patients in Malaysia. Your case reports have been published in Malaysian Oncology Society Conference.
We have to tell to the fellow oncologists about the safety of the protocol, that is very important and secondly about its efficacy ONLY when it is prescribed at right stage, i.e. at minimal tumor load.

I think that would be the best way to use this platform for strengthening the cause.
Due to my participation in Coneference on Cancer Immunotherapy in NIH, I could not reply to you earlier.
