For those who have an interest in cancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMCs): The following is a calendar of ASCO activity in LMCs for the remainder of 2010 and for 2011. Additional events will be finalized (including the schedule and locations of official 2011 Best of ASCO® meetings) over the coming months. For updates and more information, these and other ASCO meetings and workshops are also posted on the ASCO Calendar of Events (www.asco.org/calendar).

In addition, ASCO and the ASCO Cancer Foundation are now accepting applications for the 2011 International Development and Education Award (IDEA), designed to support the professional development of early-career oncologists in LMCs. Recipients of this award are paired with an ASCO mentor, attend ASCO’s 2011 Annual Meeting (June 3-7, 2011) and participate in a post-Meeting visit to their mentor’s institution in the United States or Canada. Recipients also receive three years of complimentary membership with ASCO. The deadline for submitting an application for the IDEA program is January 12, 2011. Complete details about the application and selection process, award terms, and eligibility requirements are available at www.ascocancerfoundation.org/idea.

Please kindly share this announcement with any who may be interested.

Cancer remains a challenge in developing countries where resources are limited. In Nepal there are only four centres providing cancer therapy for 30 million population.National Academy Of Medical sciences(NAMS) is the only institute pursuing three years of postgraduate program on Radiation Oncology. The residents are rotated in two centres. The Bir Hospital, the oldest hospital in the country and BPKMCH(NCI) bestowed with contemporary Radiotherapy facilities. With limiations of resources the residents are trained more like a clinical oncologist and the major sphere of patients too are of hematology.

As a beginner, i guess reward of IDEA can be a great asset to boost the morales of early carrier oncology residents .
