The
Washington Post reported on several studies examining the high cost of cancer care and its effect on patients' financial situation. One study estimated that between 2001 and 2008, 13.4% of adults younger than age 65 who had cancer spent more than 20% of their income on health care, including premiums, compared with 9.7% of people with other chronic conditions and 4.4% of those with no chronic conditions. The greatest cost after insurance premiums was prescription drugs.
